San Miguel Writers’ Conference have been devoted to putting on an event in both English and Spanish. We feel that bringing great authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Barbara Kingsolver, and Margret Atwood to San Miguel to speak should be an event that can be shared by the whole community.
The need for literary presentations in Spanish was dramatically revealed in a 2005 UNESCO report outlining the low numbers of readers in Mexico. According to the report, most Mexicans read just over two books per year. For this reason the conference is committed to including Mexicans in its literary offerings, and encouraging them to discover the pleasures of reading.
We are proud to present the annual San Miguel Writers’ Conference in English and Spanish. All the conference’s keynote speakers are simultaneously translated with earphones to either Spanish or English. Many of our 90-minute workshops and intensive three-hour workshops are offered in Spanish.
