Patrons

Attracting participants every year from across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, the 5-day San Miguel Writers’ Conference is one of the most prestigious cross-cultural literary gatherings in the Americas. It has and continues to feature world-class authors and public figures.

When you become a patron, you are helping to sustain one of San Miguel’s largest cultural attractions and to support the Spanish Writing Program that provides 20 full scholarships to Mexican students. Throughout the week the students attend daily writing workshops taught by faculty from Mexico and the U.S., a keynote address in Spanish as well as a special Q&A session with the speaker. Students attend several bilingual events, including readings and lectures by local and regional authors. In addition, they are invited to audition to participate in evening events where they can share their work.

We would like to share a message from Mauricio, a former student, and volunteer:

The San Miguel Writers Conference is a unique opportunity for writers, aspiring and experienced alike, to further develop their skills and meet like-minded people. I participated in the online version (during the pandemic) and went to SM in February 2023 to join the team of volunteers. Both times I learned a lot, wrote many fun exercises, and met people who I now consider close friends. I was born in Mexico, and enjoy writing in both Spanish and English. The instructors invited to the workshops and seminars offered in Spanish are first class. Young and old can learn about specific aspects of craft, how to embark on a new poetry project, translation, and much more at no cost. This is of great value for those who can attend and would otherwise not be able to. The exchange between both programs fosters a rich sense of community. Something that would not happen without the support that the SM Conference offers.

And here is a note from Beverly Moor, an avid supporter of the Conference:

I’m a visual artist, not a writer. But when I attended my first writers conference in 2010 to see Barbara Kingsolver give her keynote address, I was so impressed that I began attending every year. (I even began hosting events!) Each year, the conference attracts world class teachers and writers, and the vibe is always warm, convivial, and buzzing with creativity. That vibrant energy inspires me as an artist (sometimes quite literally!), but more than that, it expands my love and understanding of the world. San Miguel is a truly magical place, and this conference is an integral part of what makes the city so great, Don’t miss it; sign up the very minute.
