Description
Relatively new compared with fiction, memoir is undergoing exciting and revolutionary changes as writers are experimenting with structure and form to great effect. This challenges memoir writers to think about how they present their stories.
In this craft workshop, we’ll explore the outside-the-box writing we’re seeing in this genre, inspiring us to take a new look at the structure, form, and approach to our stories. We’ll look at structures that go beyond linear and fragmented, such as circular, associative, and braided forms. We’ll cover forms within memoir—scene, vignette, poetry, musing, letter writing, impressionistic writing, and more. Also included will be a deep dive into point of view, as more writers are using second and third person in their memoirs. We’ll talk about how to harness these different voices for poetic effect and as a tool for contrasts in intimacy and distance. Finally, we’ll dive into techniques memoir writers are using, including writing to another person in their story, entering into another person’s point of view, recurring elements, lists, and much more.
