Description

The past two to three years have witnessed an explosion in book publishing. Self-publishing has evolved to be a first choice for many aspiring authors. The in-between space of hybrid, copublishing, and partnership publishing occupies valuable real estate in the publishing ecosystem, offering writers almost too many choices when it comes to how to choose and where to go. Traditional publishing remains elusive, but there are exciting developments in this space, too, including university presses doing more fiction and memoir, and indie presses experimenting with new ideas and ways of doing business to be more author-centered.

In this workshop, Brooke Warner will walk us through what the new publishing landscape looks like. As one of the primary architects of the Independent Book Publishers Association’s new Publishing MAP (Models and Author Pathways), which, just released in March 2024, delineates nine different pathways for aspiring authors, she is uniquely positioned to give us a deeper understanding of what we need and want to know about book publishing and which options might be viable fits for our work. We’ll delve into expenses, expectation-setting, the pros and cons of different models, and more. Writers and authors alike will gain invaluable insight and tools for how to assess the best path for them.
