Cindy Spiegel is co-founder and co-CEO of Spiegel & Grau, the independent publishing house she relaunched with Julie Grau in 2021. A founding editor of Riverhead Books and former co-publisher of Spiegel & Grau at Random House, Cindy has spent decades discovering, editing, and championing bestselling and award-winning authors. She brings deep expertise in the publishing and editorial process and is passionate about helping writers shape powerful stories and successful literary careers.

Cindy Spiegel

Demystifying the Publishing Process; Understanding the Editorial Process; the Marketplace; writing in general

Cindy Spiegel was a founding editor of Riverhead Books, where she later became Co-Publisher with Julie Grau, with whom she went on to co-found Spiegel & Grau at Random House. In 2021, they relaunched Spiegel & Grau as an indie publisher, and they now serve as co-CEOs and continue to acquire and edit books, along with their staff. Cindy has launched the literary careers of writers including James McBride, Khaled Hosseini, Bryan Stevenson, Chang-rae Lee, Gary Shteyngart, Alex Garland, Philipp Meyer, Kathleen Norris, Danzy Senna, Catherine Raven, Shelley Read, among many others. She has also edited bestselling books by Yuval Noah Harari, Harold Bloom, Bruce Holsinger, Steven Rinella, Dan Pink, Sara Gruen, Yann Martel, Anne Lamott, and many more. She sits on the board of Archangel Ancient Tree Archive and on the advisory board of the nonprofit publisher Columbia Global Reports and is co-editor of the anthology OUT OF THE GARDEN: WOMEN WRITERS ON THE BIBLE. Her areas of expertise include Demystifying the Publishing Process, Understanding the Editorial Process, and pretty much anything else about publishing.
