The Short Story and Microfiction Workshop is intended for people interested in writing very short to extremely short fiction. These stories can be one, two, or three lines long, or one or two paragraphs. In the case of microfiction, the length should not exceed one page; for short stories, lengths can range from two pages up to five or six.Various definitions of both microfiction (or flash fiction) and the short story will be provided and discussed in class, as well as aspects of these two literary forms: their brevity, the use of imagination and personal experience, material drawn from dreams and fantasy, and both closed and open endings.During the workshop, microfictions and short stories by authors such as Augusto Monterroso, Juan José Arreola, Julio Torri, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, and Anton Chekhov, among others, will be read and analyzed.Participants will do practical exercises; specifically, they will write microfictions and short stories that will be read and discussed in class by the instructor and the other participants. The workshop is dynamic, lively, and fun, with an emphasis on the playful aspect of microfiction and the short story.
