This workshop will focus on ways to elevate historical nonfiction into gripping, exciting storytelling. We’ll be focused on ways to shape a story so that it grabs a reader and draws them in without sacrificing accuracy or research. We’ll look at how to take real events as they happened and shape them into a narrative structure that readers can latch on to. Additionally, we’ll discuss how to research and add small details and little touches — the kinds of things one finds in fiction that can often be left out of history — and how to use them to evoke a time and place in the past. And we’ll look at unusual or unlikely research methods that can be used to develop your historical writing in new, lively ways.
